We take a look at celebrated UK label Coast and the trends for dresses which will have us ogling our screens in 2012

With the parties and sparkles of the Christmas period a dusty memory, and little to look forward to apart from the summer, if it comes, this time of year can leave a lot to the imagination. Why not take advantage of fabulous sales reductions and pick up some bargain wardrobe items which will last way beyond the damp squib of Valentine’s Day!

We’ve been particularly enamoured with the range of beautiful evening dresses from Coast, styles include shorter length, prom-inspired pieces to Oscar-worthy elegant, floor-length gowns…if only we had an invite! Here are a few key trends and looks to keep your eye on:

Florals and feminine details

Coast’s Monet Dress and Georgia May Duchess Satin Print Dress (center) embraces one of the spring’s key trends – painterly florals – and elegantly translates this theme into an evening context. These styles are absolutely gorgeous, and the rich fabrics and deep colours combine to create the perfect amount of after-dark drama. Look out for intricate ruched details and tiny capped shoulders for that extra feminine flair.

Longer lengths



It is safe to say that 2012 is going to be the year of the Maxi. Floor-length bandeau style maxi dresses are the hottest evening dress trend and Coast’s Revello, Michigan and Symphony maxi dress styles are beautiful examples of this dreamy aesthetic. Not to mention that we’re stepping into a lighter and brighter 2012.

Spring looks set to bring clean, aquatic inspired hues of blue to the forefront. Think cobalt, indigo and azure. Coasts dresses span the blue spectrum with designs in dark navy all the way to fresh Atlantic tones.

In the world of fashion the summer season can only mean one thing, the legs are coming out and it is skirt season! :)

Summer 2011 is no different and as it’s looking like a hot one, it could be that skirts are practical for longer. The basics of skirts tend not to change too much throughout the seasons, but it’s the material that tends to change over the seasons. So what is going to be hot, or rather keeping us cool, this summer 2011?

One of the hottest materials for skirts this year is lace. No it’s not a brand new trend, but as with all styles that span across seasons it has evolved. This season it has turned back to its classic roots and is about stand out pieces on skirts rather than an all over material. Following hot on the heels of lace are the 70’s materials of crochet and macramé.

This revival of materials is perfect for those with a love of all things nautical, French Riviera and retro. The open weaves make them perfect for beachwear and are a breezy style that helps keep the heat away on those long summer days. Sometimes it all comes down to the detailing and the next large trend picks up on this. With every season colours as well as materials are important, this season look out for skirts with floral patterns and blend in with the blooming flowers!

I really love how all these bold colors are popping up everywhere this season! Even if you decide to choose cobalt blue or vibrant green or choose this wonderful coral red, you will most likely create some smashing ensembles.

Lately I have been obsessing over this lovely mix : CORAL or RED, BLACK, WHITE and NUDE.  Katie Holmes does a very good job at styling this summer 2011 look.  Everything about her style is practically a must have for this season, starting with the nude silk blouse and accessorizing with a cool animal print bag and some awesome strappy sandals.

Like in every bold color combination, all you have to take in consideration is the golden rule : wear with neutrals!

Mettallics! The word of glory this season not only for clothes or accessories, but also for make-up products. My Swiss holiday last week got me thinking of the fact that temperature shouldn’t be the one to influence our style and our desire to look and feel good even if it’s cold or rainy outside. I know that sometimes you just want to be warm and comfortable, so you end up settling for the coziest clothes you have even if they are not the quite part of the ‘fashionista package’.

There are times when I’m such in a hurry or not in the mood to dress up and freeze in god knows what fancy attire, so I kinda play it safe. Nothing shiny, nothing edgy…but after that I just feel sorry because at the end of the day, fashion should be fun and should brighten your day. I know there are lots of smashing options that would work and that are actually quite simple to combine.

The Accessories

Accessories are really the easiest thing you can work. You can use accessories to really make your outfit more glamorous and fun. Even if you wear basics like a loose sweater and jeans, warm flat boots and a dark jacket, you can pick some accessories that really stand out. For example a pair of cool gloves, a funky bracelet,  a statement scarf or a colorful hat. Accessories can dress up or down your entire outfit and can really change it completely.

Jewelry can also be a good way to make your outfit feel more alive and it’s the easiest thing. It is weather-proof as it almost gets covered by jackets and scarves. Try to get single pieces but focus on statement ones and don’t overdo it, Christmas trees are not always nice to look at :-)

Last but not least, the clothes!

Wonderful pieces are such a waste to keep indoors. Wear your favorite shirts even if they are silky but cuddle them under a warm coat or cardigans. Skirts can also be made part of an incredible attire as you can wear long boots or warm stockings to keep cold away. I am going to pick my

Winter 2010 has its own rules. And when it comes to nail-polish and lacquer trends, the season is jolly indeed :)

The main thing we need to consider this season is that innovation and experiment are new directions taken also by the beauty industry. It’s not just color and shine that are important, but also the texture of the nail-polish and nail lacquers. Besides the usual glossy and slick look, nails are taking 2 new finishes : MATTE and GLITTERY.

When you think about it, these finishes are quite the opposite: the  matte finish stands for classy and more of a softer look while glitter shouts party all the way! I particularly love the matte metallic tones. Silver and gold don’t stand a chance in the daylight if they aren’t matte. You can use the matte effect to dress down an edgy look and to give it a more friendly effect.

The other nail-polish trend for this winter is the glittery nail. Strong shades give the perfect jewel nail effect and they go perfectly with light colors and romantic looks.  For a festive look glitter nail-polish can be just the ingredient you needed! Gold and silver tones are full of whimsy and charm and they are the perfect choice for a homemade Christmas party. There are some risks, so you should be careful how you pair them, as Christmas trees are only in fashion for a short time and you don’t want to be looking like one ;)
