SPRING TRENDS 2010 : Khakis Accessories

Still February outside, but in my heart it’s already starting to look like spring :) But, as fashion is always ahead we can already check out what is waiting for us this season. Khakis are on the rise this season and so is the entire military trend this summer 2010 season. Lots of designers looked away from the girly bohemian options and made this color and trend the season hero.

Rock details are still in, studs and zippers, chains or other metallic hardware. The idea is to keep your outfit simple if you go for the military trend jacket or flashy accessories. All these look amazing paired with black or white pieces, as well as gold or silver details.  For evening outfits, you can pair khaki accessories with shredded tees or leather pants/leggings  to get the edgy military Balmain look.

Nicholas Kirkwood worked the khaki trend with snake leather details and bold platforms. Check out more about the 2010 Reptile Trend here.

Fun to Wear: Normal Watches

Logos and witty quotes are never out of fashion so when I came across these cool watches they really made my day. The messages are up-to-date and universal, very funny and witty, you won’t know what to choose when you see them all on NormalWathces.com. I picked some of them and I featured them in a poll, what do you think?

Embrace the Maxi Dress -Spring Style

Do you know how to pick the perfect maxi dress ?

I am actually really freaked out about the maxi dress but I try to keep it together and present this as objectively as I can. The maxi dress trend has started to rise again last summer and it’s going to be big this season (as trends always have one year for launch and one for adoption) . I have been reluctant about this trend because I am petite and I felt that a maxi dress would cover me up completely and I’d look like a blanket.

No wonder I was scared!!! But yesterday I visited some stores and I tried it on just for fun. I had some wedges on, so I guess this helped, but the result was really cool! Maxi dresses are not what they used to be when our mothers wore them. Today we have tons of options and figure-flattering styles.

For example, if you are short you can choose a more structured type of dress. Try to reduce ruffles and extra beading, go for more simple styles. Empire waist is ok, unless the dress has too much volume. Even if you choose a strapless dress the options are generous and the patterns can combine abstract details, ethnic prints or floral prints.

If you are tall you have absolute freedom to experiment with the lenght of the dress but be careful with the shoes. Choose flat sandals or gladiators and an ankle lenght dress, this will make you have a ballanced look. Also, try to wear your hair down or in a casual bun.

Wear the casual maxi dress with :

  • Gladiators or wedges

  • Cropped jeans jacket

  • Bohemian Jewelry

  • A Beach Hat

  • Messenger Bag

Trendsetters Beware, there’s a new Katie in Town!

A few weeks ago, while in search of inspiration, trends and meaningful examples to share, I ran into this surprising blog. It seemed to have a common approach to post photos of outfits worn on different days, with some links towards the brand websites.

However, while scrolling down something weird just happened to me. Curiosity stroke me and made me discover more and to wait for a new outfit every day. It happens that this “Katie” is not as the usual Katies out there, it actually happens that she is truly a fashionista! I don’t really know if this is a personal blog or something more, but I guaranty that this website will amaze you : What Katie Wore.

Katie is this sweet young girl who “looks good in anything” (this is from one of the posts but I have to admit it’s rather true ! ). No matter how eccentric  her clothes may look, she manages to pull off these incredibly colorful and powerful outfits. As I said in some articles before, we can learn a lot just by watching people with great style. It is actually quite instructive to see how Katie wears neon colored thighs, oversized jewelry or short spring jackets.

There are also tons of other fantastic examples of how to combine fashion forward pricey pieces (Chanel, United Nude, Escada or Bulgari) with urban cheap options (Topshop, Accessorize, Urban or H&M). I even discovered brands I didn’t even know existed so I’m really thankful for that :)

Another things that I love are the unique accessories. Some of them are modern plastic-made, others are vintage (for example she wears this cool unique necklace made from different old watches). Oh, and I totally became a fan of the checkered thighs ! Apparently Katie has dozens of them as well as many casual chic vests or ankle booties.

You can also get an idea of how to wear the shirt dress trend or the harem pants. I love this blog, you can check it out clicking the link above or on my blogroll. I think it’s worth reading from time to time and just getting inspired.

Dress like a trend setter - 2

1. Crazy hat - hot color of the season (left) or vintage Hollywood (right). You can wear a hat with a casual outfit too, like jeans and a graphic tee.

2. Ankle boots - Grey tones vs Robin Hood inspired.

3. Classic Coat -  The blazer look is easy to pull off because you can wear it unbuttoned and so it will mix with the rest of the clothes. Go for a longer blazer this season with one button.

4. The accessories - Opaque Thighs, Scarf, Black Leather Gloves and Statement Jewelry are the right way of looking chic.

5. The leather bag - big clutch or big tote …you choose!

I know you all have these things in your wardrobes, what are you waiting for?  :)

Dress like a trend setter

You’ve seen them….I know you have. They pop out when you least expect them to bringing a mouthful of fresh air and attracting all eyes. Sometimes they scare you, they shock and they mesmerize but other times, you wish you were like them : SHINING TRENDS.

It’s a mystery where do trendsetters get their inspiration, but they seem to be on top of styles everytime. It is said they don’t follow trends, they make trends and they lead. Maybe…or maybe they cheat :).

Here a few ideas to pick up some trend setter vibes.

TIPS:

1. Don’t become a copy-cat, try to show your own personal style. Wear things in a different way and create outfits that  balance your own personality and the season’s trends.

2. Get inspired from the fashion shows. You can know trends in advance and so you can focus on items that are fashion forward and that could be an investment for a couple of next seasons.

3. Visit vintage stores and choose items that fit the trends and your style, try on the craziest clothes because you never know what can be just perfect.

4. Create  cheap-expensive outfits with a few glam accessories and some basic clothing.  For example you can create a look with a simple T-shirt from H&M matched with some Louboutins.

5. Look for jewelry and accessories with unusual detailing. These items make a statement about you and show that you don’t follow the rules. Create a set for each color or attitude (playful, serious, in love)

6. Don’t wear the same outfit. Recreate the look with other pieces and accessories. Try to follow your mood and you’ll be inspired every time.

Fur coats and vests are IN

Furs are becoming the It item of this season. Even if you try a boho vintage style or a monochromatic short vest you will be glam this season. I’ve spoted some hot fashionistas and I put them as a testimony for this cool trend. There are a lot of choices for furs especially if you already have them. You can make them shorter and skinier or even belt them. Alexander McQueen tempts us with a large variety of mix and matches, you could try to create something like this on a regular coat, with some extra furry patches. :)
